Verdict: The Aura Pro is CZUR's middle option: a book scanner that folds away when you're done. CZUR lists a 14MP sensor (4320 × 3240), scanning of material smaller than A3 and about 2 seconds per page. It flattens curved pages with laser lines, includes a side light and a foot pedal. If you scan ordinary books, notebooks and paperwork and don't need the ET MAX's thickness or resolution, it covers a lot of ground for about a third of the cost.

Key specs

  • Sensor: 14MP CMOS, 4320 × 3240 pixels
  • Scan area: material smaller than A3
  • Stated speed: about 2 seconds per page, and about 2 seconds per two-page book spread (CZUR notes it varies with lighting)
  • Exports: JPG, PDF, searchable PDF, Word, Excel and TIFF (converted from JPG)
  • Text recognition: 180+ languages
  • Hardware: three laser lines for page-curve detection, 2-inch preview screen, side light, foot pedal
  • Connection: USB 2.0
  • Systems: Windows XP/7 or later, macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon and macOS 12 or later on Intel Macs

What stands out

It folds. The Aura Pro's arm folds against its base. If your desk does double duty, that makes it far easier to live with than a fixed-arm scanner.

Real book support at a mid price. Many low-cost overhead scanners are flat-page only. The Aura Pro uses three laser lines to read the curve of an open book, then flattens and splits the spread in software. That suits paperbacks, workbooks and notebooks.

Room for loose sheets. It scans material smaller than A3, which helps with drawings, maps and school projects that don't fit a letter-size flatbed.

Hands-free workflow. The foot pedal and auto-scan on page turn let you keep both hands on the book. CZUR's software also removes fingertips that appear at the page edges.

Built-in preview. A 2-inch preview screen on the unit shows what the camera sees, which helps you line up a page before you capture it.

What to watch

The Aura Pro's 14MP sensor has fewer pixels than the ET MAX's 38MP. That's comfortable for reading and text recognition, but if you're archiving detailed illustrations, the ET MAX captures more detail.

Book thickness isn't published for this model, so for very thick textbooks the ET MAX is the safer pick. Speed figures also differ between sources: CZUR's spec pages say about 2 seconds, while some retailers quote 1.5 seconds. We've used the 2-second figure.

Who it's for

  • Students scanning chapters, notes and workbooks
  • Readers who want to keep digital copies of their own books
  • Home offices that handle both bound reports and loose paperwork
  • Anyone with limited desk space who needs a book scanner occasionally

How it compares

Against the ET MAX, the Aura Pro gives up resolution (14MP vs 38MP), HDMI output and Linux support, but it costs far less and folds away. Against the Shine800A3 Pro, it adds book flattening, side lighting and the 2-inch preview screen, while the Shine is cheaper and quicker per flat sheet. The CZUR review has a full table of all four scanners, and the ScanSnap SV600 comparison covers the closest rival.

Setup tips

Unfold the arm fully before scanning so the camera sits at its designed height. Use the black mat to give the software a clear page edge. For books, keep the spine centered under the laser lines and hold the edges lightly with your fingertips; CZUR's software is designed to erase them. Close nearby blinds if direct sun falls on the page, since CZUR notes speed and results vary with lighting.
