CZUR vs ScanSnap SV600: Two Approaches to Overhead Book Scanning

Verdict: The ScanSnap SV600 and CZUR's book scanners solve the same problem: scanning a bound book without cutting it or pressing it on glass. They get there with different hardware. The SV600 uses a CCD sensor that sweeps across the page and quotes about 3 seconds per A3 page. CZUR's ET MAX and Aura Pro use a single-shot CMOS camera, quote 1.5 to 2 seconds per page or two-page spread, and add laser lines for page-curve detection and a foot pedal. Choose the ET MAX if you scan thick books often and want the highest resolution. Choose the Aura Pro for a lower-cost, foldable book scanner. The SV600 makes sense if you already work in ScanSnap Home and like its software ecosystem.

Sensor and resolution

The biggest hardware difference is how the image is captured. CZUR uses a camera that takes the whole page in one shot. The SV600 uses a CCD with lens-reduction optics that sweeps across the page, and PFU publishes optical resolution as a range because the scan angle changes across the document. Its output modes go up to 600 dpi color in its Excellent mode, which PFU lists alongside the optical figures.

On paper, the ET MAX's 38MP sensor gives it the most raw detail of the three. The Aura Pro's 14MP sensor has fewer pixels than the ET MAX's 38MP. For reading copies and text recognition, any of the three should be adequate; for fine detail, the ET MAX has the advantage on specs.

Book thickness and page size

The ET MAX and SV600 take A3-class flat documents; the Aura Pro scans material smaller than A3. For books, the ET MAX lists the most room, at 50 mm thickness on A4 pages. The SV600 lists 30 mm, but PFU notes that documents thicker than 5 mm reduce the scan area to 400 × 300 mm.

Speed and workflow

CZUR quotes about 1.5 seconds (ET MAX) and about 2 seconds (Aura Pro) per flat page or two-page spread. PFU quotes about 3 seconds per A3 landscape page in all quality modes. In real use, the time it takes to turn and settle each page often matters more than capture time. All three can capture automatically when they detect a page turn, and the CZUR models add a foot pedal for manual control.

Software

The SV600 runs on ScanSnap Home, the same software used across PFU's ScanSnap range, with automatic book correction and a point-retouch tool for fixing fingers and small marks. CZUR's software offers curve flattening, finger removal, page splitting and text recognition in 180+ languages, with export to searchable PDF, Word and Excel. If you already manage scans in ScanSnap Home, staying with it has real value. If you want Linux support or HDMI presenting, the ET MAX lists both.

Which should you choose?

  • Thick textbooks, ledgers or large collections: the CZUR ET MAX, for its thickness range and resolution.
  • Everyday books on a budget, limited desk space: the CZUR Aura Pro, which folds away.
  • Already in the ScanSnap ecosystem: the SV600 keeps everything in one app.

For flat pages only, CZUR's Shine800A3 Pro and Lens800 Pro are simpler alternatives. The CZUR review covers the full lineup.
